What do you need to know and do?
Eligible students will have the option to travel overseas to either Singapore or Miri, Malaysia to engage in a two-week study tour program in 2023.
This unit runs similar to your other units, except that the learning will take place overseas under the guidance of academic staff and industry leaders:
You should still be able to enrol into your full-time study load in Semester 2, 2022 and Semester 1, 2023 if you wish. The credit points earned by completing the unit while on the trip affect your enrolment. |
When do we travel?
Grab your passport for two weeks as you will be able to go to:
- Miri, Malaysia (round 1): Friday, 25 November 2022 to Friday, 9 December 2022 (arrives Perth 1:25am 10 December)
- Miri, Malaysia (round 2): Friday, 6 January 2023 to Friday, 20 January 2023 (arrives Perth 1:25am 21 January).
- Singapore: Sunday, 8 January 2023 to Sunday, 22 January 2023 (arrives Perth 00:40am 23 January).
Which tertiary students can participate?
To be eligible, you must:
- Be an Australian citizen as the NCP funding is only available to Australian citizens. If you are an Australian Citizen and also a citizen of either Malaysia or Singapore, you cannot travel to the other country that you are also a citizen of. For example, you are an Australian Citizen but also a citizen of Malaysia; this means that you cannot travel to Malaysia and instead, would have to apply to travel to Singapore.
- Be undergraduate Bachelor or Bachelor (Honours) students, not a postgraduate students.
- Be in Good Standing at the start of the program (unless granted exemption). You may be withdrawn due to a breach of misconduct. There is no minimum GPA requirement, but we will review your Academic eRecord against your explanation as to why you want to go / what you hope to get out of the experience: — a holistic assessment will be made on applications against the eligibility criteria.
- You need to be able to enrol into and complete WORK2005 as part of a Bachelor or Bachelor (Honours) degree to be eligible. If you have finished your degree by the time the trips take place, you will not be eligible as you will not be able to receive the course credits per the NCP funding requirements.
- you must have a current Australian passport that is valid for up to 6 months after your intended return travel date (i.e. if travelling in January 2023, the passport must be valid until July 2023); this is an NCP funding requirement. You are encouraged to apply if you still need to renew your passport and you can make this disclosure to us within the application form.
- 70% of students must be aged between 18 and 28 (inclusive) at the commencement of the CA-I3STP:
o This does not apply if you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
o Mature age students are still encouraged to apply! - NOT be employed by the branch of DFAT that administers the NCP.
- NOT during the course of your Bachelor Degree or Bachelor Honours Degree: receive NCP funding from DFAT:
▪ as a Student Grant under more than one Semester Grant;
▪ as a Student Grant under more than one Short-term Grant; or
▪ as a Student Grant under both a Semester Grant and a Short-term Grant for
the same Mobility Project or for the same period of travel outside of
Australia. - Have successfully completed 100 credit points at the time of application
- Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at the time of application
- Must agree to uphold all relevant DFAT and Curtin policies (including attending the program activities) while abroad — poor behaviour will not be tolerated and may result in you being sent home early
What about a plus one?
If a partner / friend is also applying for this opportunity and you would like to travel together, you can both indicate your preference(s) in the online application form. We will endeavour to do our best to accommodate you to the extent we can so but your partner / friend must also be a Curtin student.
- Note that it will not be possible at this stage to bring plus ones who are not studying at Curtin or applying for this program.
Cost - how much will this 2 week experience be?
The New Colombo Plan funding will cover the cost of flights, accommodation, most of your meals and program-based activities (including corresponding transport).
Disclaimer: Final costings may change as final activities are locked in – we will be transparent about any cost to you.
- It is anticipated that students will need to pay at least AUD$100 (non-refundable) to secure their place. This cost may be higher or lower depending on the location you travel to and the final cost of the experience, especially in light of the time of year. This information will be updated in the coming weeks/months.
- With the weekends free, you may want to bring some extra funds to explore beautiful Malaysia or exciting Singapore!
- Miri, Malaysia: we estimate this to be approximately AUD$100–$200
- Singapore: we estimate this to be approximately AUD$1,000
Disclaimer: Final costings may change as final activities are locked in – we will be transparent about any cost to you.
Accomodation
Students will be staying in apartments in Miri, Malaysia and in twin-share hotels in Orchard, Singapore. We will be grouping students by gender to maintain safety and manage our risk. The accommodation will be sanitary, nice and clean with air-conditioning provided and in central locations. More details about specific accommodation will be provided once it has been confirmed.
- Accommodations for students with physical disabilities or medical conditions: you will need to communicate any disability or medical condition to us. A preliminary disclosure can be made on the application form and we will discuss your particular situation with you.
The Catch?
There isn't one really! The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade provides funding through a Program called the New Colombo Plan. This funding will cover majority of your costs and beyond this you will need to travel as part of the program and complete the corresponding assessments to receive the course credits.
- Please note that you cannot attend multiple trips as the NCP funding does not allow for this and we want to give 240 different students an equal opportunity to participate!
